We announced a £7bn investment programme to transform our business and revolutionise how we work across five key areas: world-class customer experience, operational and technical excellence, modernising our IT estate, improving our colleague experience and building a culture of sustainability. Our BA Better World commitments to People, Planet and Responsible Business will underpin every step of our transformation journey over the next three years.

Having welcomed 7,500 new colleagues into the airline in 2023, we started an investment programme to transform the colleague experience. We want BA to be somewhere our people are proud to work and a company that creates lasting, positive impact.

Building colleague awareness and engagement around sustainability at all levels

During 2023, we engaged our colleagues in a variety of ways: 

  • We held targeted sustainability events for our senior leadership team.
  • For the second consecutive year, we included a climate-related target as part of colleagues’ remuneration criteria.
  • We continued to focus on reducing emissions generated in our operations – utilising key tools such as dashboards to embed sustainability within our colleagues’ business area and day-to-day roles.
  • We expanded our networks of sustainability champions.
  • We ran a series of roadshows to raise awareness of our sustainability strategy and encourage our colleagues to take action. The roadshows took place across the company, including in engineering, at our engagement centres and in our crew areas.

We hosted our annual Sustainability Fayre and Awards to recognise the hard work and achievements of our colleagues from across the business who have worked to excel us in our BA Better World journey.

A total of 12 awards were presented, and as part of the fayre, we welcomed organisations we support through the BA Better World Community Fund, including Fantasy Wings, Sofea and Dreamflight.

  • In 2023, we appointed two pilots to help us drive flight crew engagement on sustainability. As part of their engagement plan, the duo introduced a specialist sustainability training module for all our pilots in their 6-monthly simulator check, including training on reduced engine taxi techniques which have been shown to help reduce emissions compared to standard taxi techniques. In just six months, we saw a 57% increase in reduced engine taxi out (before take-off) on the A320 fleet at London Heathrow, and a 15% increase in reduced engine taxi In (after landing) across all fleets at outstations.
  • We also added a new sustainability module for cabin crew training, introducing them to BA Better World and outlining how they can make a difference in their role.

We’re grateful to each of our colleagues who go the extra mile to support each other, and our customers, to create an airline that we can be proud of.

Our Above & Beyond recognition platform celebrates and appreciates the amazing things our people do every day. In 2023, 106,614 pieces of recognition were sent by British Airways colleagues through the platform. This was a 213% increase from 2022.

At our annual Thank You Fest event, we celebrate our colleagues that are most frequently recognised for championing our five company values. In 2023, 250 colleagues attended the celebratory event.

Supporting communities

  • We have 4,600 ‘Flying Start’ champions who are actively involved in community volunteering and fundraising initiatives – from making charity announcements onboard through to helping local foodbanks distribute donations to those in need. We have also established wellbeing, war on waste and wildlife champion networks.
  • In 2023, approximately 3,000 colleagues donated to 597 charities, raising £1,175,474, through payroll giving.
